One baby cried when she heard her daddy’s voice, giving the doctors a means for intubation. I couldn’t see the girls until I was sutured up. They wheeled me out of the surgical room with tears streaming and traumatized from surgery, and directly into the NICU so I could have as much time as I could with my babes. I held them briefly while the doctors and nurses were trying to get them to breath. Soon both girls were intubated and hooked up to machines. Seeing their tiny bodies in this way is something I will never forget. With what strength they had, their hands grasped my finger. Their eyes fluttered. Their limbs were long, fingers slender, with the cutest faces and chins, and my husbands dark curly hair. Even though they were conjoined, they had distinct differences from one another, and were truly individuals.
We had the most amazing nurses and doctors that took great care of our girls. I am so grateful. The team did all that they could to keep them stable and help them breath, even with declining blood pressure. We knew it was a long shot, but what kind of people would we be if we didn’t try?
We had them baptized. And as all the tubes were taken out, we talked to them, touched them, they met their grandparents and other loved ones.
Letting our babies go was the hardest decision we ever made. We had around 4 hours to enjoy them and take in all their beauty. The wonderful nurses captured hand and foot prints, and other keepsakes and memento’s during a time we couldn’t have done it ourselves.
As heartbroken as we are we know that we did everything we could, and we have absolutely no regrets.
Thank you to everyone who has reached out, both loved ones and complete strangers. Your kind words, prayers, and support has uplifted our spirits. Our journey will still continue.
